Vegan Milkshake | Refined Sugar Alternatives

We’ve kicked of the 7 steps to Meal Planning, and the first step is all about transforming refined sugar habits into nutritious alternatives. You can join the program anytime you like by following this link to sign up for my special Meal Planning!

Here is one Sweet Alternative that I’ve used for over ten years to replace dairy deserts. I call it,

young coconut

Coco-Cacao “Milk”shake

When I discovered how to whack into a young coconut my life changed forever… You see, I used to love ice cream. It was one of my favorite foods. I even worked at an ice cream parlor in Austin called Amy’s Ice Creams. We had a reputation for being creative and performing fancy tricks with the oh-so-thick recipe of various ice creams, like throwing a spade full of ice cream across 6th street to a hopeful customer holding a plastic bowl. If they caught the wildly flying blob of ice cream, they got to eat it for free. Most of the time it went splat on the sidewalk, and we went back into the ice cream shop to make a new one.

I hadn’t noticed that I gained weight during the job, but I definitely noticed that once I quit I lost 10 lb. !!

Over the past ten years, I fix my sweet tooth craving for ice cream with non-dairy options that I find to be just as tasty with less of the adverse lethargic aftermath. The nutritional benefits in this “milk”shake are actually invigorating because of the high content of vitamins and minerals found in the fresh fruits and superfoods.

cacao nibs pure

This is the recipe I use. It is SO simple… 🙂

  1. Whack into a Young Coconut, or buy either Coconut Water or Coconut milk from the store
  2. Place 1 or 1 1/4 frozen banana in a blender
  3. Pour the contents of 1 Young Coconut or 1 cup of Coconut Water or milk into the blender
  4. Add a small handful of frozen blueberries + 1/2 TBS Almond Butter (optional)
  5. Sprinkle 1 TBS Raw Cacao nibs
  6. Add 1/2 tsp Maca Powder (optional)
  7. Blend for 30 seconds
  8. Pour and Enjoy

Do you have your own Refined Sugar Alternatives? It would be SWEET if you shared your experience in the comment section below!

This is funny – I use exacely the same ingredients for my banana smoothie.
My new year’s Resolution for 1989 was to drink coffee without sugar. I suffered a little bit for 5 days, after that I simply loved it – never knew the taste of coffee before. I stick to that resolution till today. No sugar in my drinks. As I only drink water herbal teas and my beloved coffee I don’t miss anything but what I like to do is to flavour my rose hip or mallow tea with cinamon, vanilla and gloves,
I also eat a lot of nuts. They are so delicious when roasted in a pan ( no fat)- I sprincle them over most of my Food.
In the last three years the vegan movement is becoming more and more popular here. That makes things much easier as I can get almond, hazelnut, coconut, oatmeal and Rice milk in most supermarkets .
So far so good. I never had a sweet tooth until my first pregnancy and since then I do have a problem I admit. I use spices. I avoid white sugar and go for coconut sugar or maple Sirup- it is still sugar, I know. I think baking is my downfall, I cut down on the sugar in the receipes I use dried fruits like dates a lot – nuts , coconut. – very tasty and I know what’s in my baking but still it is sugar. All in all it’s a long way to go.

I believe one would be wise to listen to your dietary advice, one look at you and one can see that you have radiant health and a burning passion to thrive in your life and work. You’re doing something right and it is not just your yoga practice. I guess it is good bye to my morning muffin with my green tea. Now I just need to find a way to sweeten my tea and I’ll be alright.
